On
May 22, 2004, the Lehman College Foundation and the International Health
Awareness Network (IHAN) honored 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi
at the United Nations Delegates' Dining Room.
Alumni,
scholars, civic leaders and writers joined College and United Nations
officials to honor Mrs. Ebadi, who spoke of the importance of peace and
human rights in today's troubled world. Proceeds from the reception established
the Shirin Ebadi Peace Scholarship at Lehman College. The scholarship
will be awarded to students interested in pursuing world peace. IHAN works
to improve women's healthcare in developing nations.

The following day on Campus, Lehman College and
IHAN co-sponsored a day-long symposium about world peace. The symposium,
entitled “The Role of Women
in World Peace, and the Role of Men and Boys in Gender Equity,” featured
speakers from the worlds of academia and diplomacy.

Ms. Ebadi was the keynote speaker for the conference.
In her address, Mrs. Ebadi stressed the need for awareness, knowledge
and education, particularly for women and girls, as a route to a more
peaceful world. Lehman College President Ricardo R. Fernández
presented Mrs. Ebadi with the Lehman Leadership Award for her work advancing
peace and gender equality.
