LEHMAN HONORS RECEPTION

On March 11, 2004, Richard S. Fuld, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lehman Brothers hosted the Lehman Honors Reception at the Lehman Brothers headquarters in midtown Manhattan. It culminated our celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Lehman College and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Herbert H. Lehman. The event saluted the achievements of the College, Lehman's seven distinguished faculty members, Lehman's Honors College, and the High School for American Studies, which is housed on the Lehman College Campus.

The Foundation raised over $150,000 for the newly-established Herbert H. Lehman Endowed Scholarship Fund. Benno C. Schmidt, Jr., Chairman of the City University of New York Board of Trustees, served as Master of Ceremonies.

We were proud to have over 30 members of the Lehman family (some from as far away as England) as guests. Family members included Robert M. Morgenthau, District Attorney of New York County, and The Honorable John L. Loeb, Jr., Ambassador of the United States of America, Retired, who helped to underwrite the event. Family members Susan Morgenthau, Wendy Lehman Lash, June Bingham Birge and Sarah Morgenthau served on the planning committee for this event.

The evening's guests included alumni, friends, and supporters from the corporate and non-profit sectors, as well as Lehman College administrators, Deans, faculty, staff and officials from other CUNY colleges.

Lehman College was named in 1968 for the late Governor and Senator from New York . He was renowned for his unwavering integrity and commitment to social reforms that we take for granted today, such as the minimum wage, unemployment insurance, old age benefits, public housing, civil rights, medical care for the disabled and laws to protect workers.

Govenor Lehman also served as Director General of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) where he directed the largest international relief effort in history distributing 24 million tons of food, clothing and medical supplies to 500,000 World War II refugees.

Like many others in his family, Herbert H. Lehman was committed to personal philanthropy, and we at Lehman College have benefited from the extended Lehman family's generous spirit.
